What is Iftar?

Iftar is breaking the fast at sunset (Maghrib). The Sunnah is to break the fast promptly, and to keep it simple, often with dates and water if available, then pray Maghrib.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The people will remain upon goodness so long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.”

Sahih al-Bukhari

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to break his fast with fresh dates… if not, then dry dates… and if not, then with water.”
