Zakat al-Fitr is based on a set quantity of staple food, traditionally:

1. One ṣāʿ (approximately 2.5–3 kg) of staple food
2. (such as rice, wheat, dates, or similar)

Many scholars allow this to be paid as a monetary equivalent, based on local food costs.
