What is Zakat al‑Fitr?

Zakat al-Fiṭr (also called Fiṭrah) is a mandatory charity given at the end of Ramadan.


It:

  1. Purifies the fast from shortcomings
  2. Ensures those in need can celebrate Eid with dignity
  3. Is required from almost every Muslim household


“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined Zakat al‑Fitr as purification for the fasting person from idle talk and improper speech and as food for the poor.” - Abu Dawud
